AOECS - the Association of European Coeliac Societies – is a not-for-profit organisation and acts as an umbrella organisation for European national coeliac societies. One of the organisation’s aims is “to work for the best possible safety, availability and labelling of foods and products suitable for people intolerant to gluten”.
In 2012, AOECS launched a licensing scheme for the use of the Crossed Grain Trademark (CGT) on gluten-free products. Products bearing the CGT are considered safer for coeliac consumers as they must undergo additional testing and auditing to meet licensing requirements.
