Free From Functional Food Expo 2018 - Hamish Renton

Has Vegan got an image problem?

I’ve been thinking a lot in recent weeks about the rise of the Vegan category, wandering the supermarket shelves and thinking through the rapid rise of Vegan products and brands. Vegan has clearly been the retail focus of the last six months with many UK supermarkets launching ranges across chilled grocery and food to go fixtures. Sandwiches, ready meals, pizza, meal centres etc - there has never been a wider range on offer and the talents of dedicated retail chefs and development teams have been brought to bear on some really innovative own label ranges such as Wicked Kitchen.

What’s the current state of the lactose-free dairy market?

It continues to be the fastest growing segment in the dairy industry. This is due to greater consumer awareness for the issue of food intolerances and allergies, and the fact that lactose-free dairy is becoming more appealing to health-conscious consumers - and not only those who are lactose intolerant. In addition, sugar reduction became a hot topic for consumers in 2017, and this continues to be an important theme for producers of flavoured dairy products as well.

Mintel: non-dairy milk has grown 61% in five years

As the popularity of plant-based nutrition grows, it seems non-dairy milk* is increasingly finding its place in European refrigerators. New research from Mintel reveals that non-dairy milk sales have seen steady growth over the past five years, growing an impressive 61 percent since 2012, and are estimated to reach $2.11 billion in 2017.
While almond (64 percent market share), soy (13 percent market share) and coconut (12 percent market share) remain staples in the category, new non-dairy milk types are sparking excitement as consumers look to diversify their non-dairy milk repertoire. Indeed, new varieties have experienced fast growth in popularity as two thirds (63 percent) of those who have purchased pecan milk say they bought more pecan milk in 2017 than in 2016, while 58 percent of quinoa milk consumers say they bought more quinoa milk in 2017 than the year prior.

Im Trend: Zusatzeigenschaften von Lebensmitteln

Free-From- und Functional-Food wachsen zusammen

What’s the state of the Free From market and how did it perform in 2016?

The Free From market is in very rude health, with growth in the region of 26-27%. That’s an outstanding result, especially when you compare it to the negative growth and stagnation that is seen in other FMCG categories. If there is a star in the Free From sky, it’s Lactose-Free. The growth rates, the rate of product development, the weight of marketing investment behind the leading brands, and the expansion of distribution mean that the category is set for very rapid growth. Allied to this, whilst not technically Free From, is the lively growth of dairy alternatives such as oat milks, almond milks, soy, hazelnut etc.

Free From Insights by Mintel (interview David Jago)

What’s the current state of the free-from market in Europe?

In 2016 a record 12% of all new products launched in Europe were labelled “gluten-free”. In Europe as a whole, 6% of all new products were labelled as “vegan”, but that rose to a high of 9% in the UK and an astonishing 14% in Germany, where veganism has boomed – “flexitarianism” is the driver here, with consumers increasingly opting for a wider variety of foods including meat-free and dairy-free options.
